Book Search

March 24th, 2008

A few months ago Katie asked me if I could do a little digging for a rare book she wanted. Naturally I agreed. I considered myself good at that sort of thing, and gave it a go. After over a month I had found no copies under $650, until somehow I stumbled on a result from Amazon Japan at a fair price, and Katie got her book. It was there the whole time people, and I never saw it! So it occurred to me, as it has before, that there should be one website where you can compile book results from several websites such as Amazon, Abebooks, Alibris, etc. So yesterday I got cracking on it…

The current iteration is pretty quick and dirty, but it allows you to search 6 Amazon websites and Half.com at once, while sorting and paging your results on the fly. Pretty cool, eh? Soon I’ll add in options for Alibris and Abebooks, but you have to contact support to get access to the API documentation, so I’m waiting for a response. I suppose I should also get eBay in there somewhere…

I’ve added a link in the top menu of this site where you can track the progress of the search tool, and hopefully one day developers will be able to download it and use it on their websites (with a nice, “insert your affiliate code here” option ;)).

Here’s where you can find the search for now.
